A Surprise Birthday Photoshoot at the Four Seasons, Oahu

Sometimes the most memorable photos come from the most unexpected moments. That was certainly the case for this surprise birthday photoshoot, orchestrated by a thoughtful nephew who also happened to be a good friend of mine. He wanted his aunt to feel beautiful, celebrated, and like the queen she is. He told her they were going to see the beach at the Four Seasons and little did she know, I was there waiting with my camera.

I can imagine it might feel a little uncomfortable being photographed when you had no idea about it. Was this the outfit you would have chosen? Is your hair exactly how you wanted it? That’s why my job as a photographer is to angle, adjust, and guide so that every shot captures you at your best so that you feel confident, and beautiful just as you are.

We started the session with natural moments along the shoreline, letting her laughter and genuine joy shine. Meanwhile, I had a special surprise tucked away. Early that day I baked homemade cupcakes and carefully protected it in a Tupperware until the perfect moment. At the end of the session, we placed a candle on top, and celebrated her birthday right there on the beach.

I told her to pause, take a deep breath, and soak in the moment. To feel grateful for her family, for being in Hawaii, and for this unique celebration of her life. There’s something magical about birthdays in a place like Oahu. the sun was setting painting the sky into a beautiful soft purple and the waves were gently beating down on the shore. capturing the end of her birthday trip in photos makes the trip feel timeless.

To end the celebration, we did a mini family photoshoot, preserving memories with her loved ones before they left the beach. She had traveled all the way from Connecticut, and the day was a beautiful reminder that no matter where you are, love and thoughtful gestures make every moment extraordinary.

This surprise session wasn’t just about photos, it was about capturing a feeling, a family connection, and a birthday she will never forget.
